The third movement of Shostakovich’s Cello and Piano Sonata, Op. 40 is mostly a cello monologue. The timelessness of the opening phrase is difficult to capture, so I recommend putting the metronome away once you internalize the overall pulse and try to play the opening in a long line. As the movement continues, I point out places to let the piano come to the forefront.
